| VERDICCHIO
DI MATELICA,
"RED DRESSED AS WHITE"
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The
Verdicchio di Matelica was granted the label DOC on the 21’ July
1967, one year before its “cousin” Verdiccbio dei Castelli
di Jesi. The production area includes the heart of the Alta Valle Esina.
The north-south direction of this valley, as opposed to the other valleys
of the region all lying east-west towards the sea, generates a very cold
climate in winter and a very hot one in summer. The reaction of the vines
to these dramatic differences in temperature is to physiologically reduce
production in favour of the ripening phase. The final result is a grape
which is rich in extracts, primary fragrances, sugars and polyphenols;
for the wine this means more body, a white wine with a long maturing process
which in some vintages is improved with age, normally not true for white
wines, thus making it a “red wine dressed as white”. Among
the Italian wines, Verdicchio is one of the few white wines which can
boast a completely autochthonous history; it is a true Italian product,
of great importance, recognised in
all the guides as a great white wine conserving the real taste of Mediterranean
wine. The Verdicchio di Matelica is a great representative of its provenance:
it retains the environmental, creative, historical and social value of
the area; it is living proof; the most noble and ennobling expression
of the richness of its land. Since 1995, the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC
can also boast two important varieties: “Riserva” and “Passito”.
CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Clear, light straw colour with greenish reflections.
More golden in the mature wines, with amber hues in the “Passito”.
Bouquet: delicate, with a fresh and robust fragrance
of unripe fruit and yellow flowers, acacia and broom. In the “Passito”
it becomes ethereal and intense. Taste: delicate, structured,
full bodied, sapid, with an after taste of almonds. Harmonic and velvety
in the “Passito”. Alcoholic content: minimum
total: 11.5°, “Riserva”: 12.5°, “Passito”:
15° minimum.
ACCOMPANIMENTS
This wine can be served with a variety of dishes even if it is most suitable
with fish. Excellent with cold starters, with strong flavoured fish dishes
and sauces, fish pasta courses, lasagne and seafood risotto. The persistent
and fragrant bouquet, the harmony of the components allow for many other
accompaniments: Carpegna ham, the local salami “Ciauscolo”,
Fabriano salami, seasoned “coppa”, white meat, soups and cheese.
